The agenda for the APPG on Youth Affairs 2009 had an overarching theme of social mobility. The first meeting was held in April 2009 at the House of Commons. Young people, practitioners and policymakers joined Cabinet Minister Liam Byrne MP to discuss social mobility and introduce the topics of following meetings.

  • Wednesday 10 March 2010 – Skill development and transitions into employment
  • Wednesday 28 October 2009 – Financial support and economic wellbeing, Ministerial response
  • 27 April 2009 – Social mobility, Ministerial response

Prior to 2009, the APPG explored issues such as volunteering, young people and social exclusion, anti-social behaviour and young people and decision-making. Meetings in 2008 included:

  • Knife, gun and gang crime (Joint meeting with the APPGs on Foyers and Child & Youth Crime)
  • Every Child Matters and Disability (Joint meeting with APPGs on Disability, Mental Health, Carers, Childcare, Learning Disability)
  • Citizenship and engagement
  • Children and Young People’s Bill (Joint meeting with APPG on Children)

Wednesday 16 July 2014 – Young people’s access to low-cost housing (and AGM)

The group held a session on young people’s access to low-cost housing. We discussed the Government’s record on helping young people into housing that is both affordable, and of a sufficient quality. The group heard from former Minister Sir Andrew Stunell MP (Lib Dem, Hazel Grove) and Lord Best (Crossbench).

Tuesday 11 February 2014 – Skills and Training

Matthew Hancock, Minister of State for Skills and Enterprise and Adrian Bailey (Lab, West Bromwich West), Chair of the Business, Innovation and Skills Select Committee addressed the group on young people’s skills and the transition from education into employment.
